eBooks Blend the Best of Technology and the Written Word
By Hannah Robison and Central Arkansas Library Systems
As hardback and paperback books begin to pile up in your child's playroom, consider an alternative to physical books that could bring your children new adventures in the world of reading. Using eBooks, children are able to download thousands of titles through the Central Arkansas Library System's (CALS) website at cals.org. Though CALS does not offer the reading devices, they encourage reading in any form and have a few easy tips to help your child read eBooks and listen to audiobooks.
To visit the CALS downloadable library, point your browser to cals.org and click on the eBook and Audiobook Catalog Quick Link. Parents and children can search through the books by viewing all of the titles or choosing specific genres. If you are looking for a certain title, you can search by availability, publisher, format or subject.
To check out your downloadable book, log in with your CALS library card number and PIN. If you have forgotten your PIN you can visit any CALS branch and have it reset. If you are in need of a library card and are a resident of Pulaski and Perry counties, you can apply online or visit a CALS branch to complete the process. If you live outside of the area, call
501-918-3000 or visit a branch to see if you qualify for a card in other ways available to Arkansas residents.
Children and parents can download books from any device that connects to Internet access. Through the formats Adobe E-Pub, Kindle, MP3 audio files and WMA audio files, eBooks and audiobooks can be downloaded. If you need help or instructions, call 501-918-3097 or email eLibrary@cals.org. For additional downloading information from the CALS website, check under the Explore tab.
Whether at home or on the go, eBooks provide kids with a new way to read and learn. For parents or children, CALS has a book in any form that you are sure to explore and enjoy.
