    Michael Schmitz, MD is a Professor of Anesthesia in the UAMS College of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, practicing at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

    Dr. Schmitz received his medical degree from the University of California in San Francisco. He completed his Anesthesiology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia in Critical Care at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, PA

    Dr. Schmitz joined Arkansas Children's Hospital in 1992, and currently serves as the Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and the Co-Medical Director of the ACH Pain Clinic. Dr. Schmitz is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Hastings Center, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Arkansas Medical Society, the Arkansas Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society for Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia. Dr. Schmitz has been recognized for his teaching by the Red Sash Award, given by UAMS senior medical students to faculty members who have had the most significant impact on their medical education. Dr. Schmitz' key research interests include studies of the effects of anesthetic agents and surgery on brain development, thromboelastograph measurements on subsets of pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and studies on transport times for donor heart grafts and heart transplant outcomes. Dr. Schmitz also collaborates with his colleagues at Arkansas Children's Hospital in other studies regarding pediatric anesthesiology.
