Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Head Cooling at ACH

In Arkansas, Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) is the only hospital that can provide the full head cooling experience and important follow-up care. According to the recently released update by the American Academy of Pediatrics' Neonatal Resuscitation Program, the primary elements required to safely provide life-saving hypothermia treatment to infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are pediatric subspecialists, pediatric neuroradiologists, and doctors with specialized training in developmental follow- up.

ACH's Angel One Transport Team is trained in safe cooling practices during transport, so that cooling can be initiated sooner in order to save more brain cells. Critical to the head cooling are our NICU nurses, authorities in 24/7 head cooling.

ACH is the only hospital in Arkansas offering all these critical components:

  • Pediatric subspecialists;
  • Pediatric neuroradiologists;
  • Angel One Transport Team trained in safe cooling practices during transport;
  • NICU nurses trained in 24/7 head cooling treatment;
  • Doctors with specialized training in neonatal neurology and developmental follow-up; and
  • Capability of cooling more than two infants at one time

Put your newborn's life in the most experienced hands.

In the past 11 years, ACH is one of the busiest cooling centers in the US. To date, 106 babies have received head cooling at ACH; no other hospital in Arkansas can match our expertise.

Why consider transferring your infant to a hospital with less experience, when the NICU at ACH offers you the total head cooling experience? From Angel One Transport, trained in safe cooling practices to prevent abnormalities in overly aggressive cooling , to a multi-disciplinary team including NICU nurses providing 24/7 care who understand this technology, to critical neurological and developmental follow up to assess babies - the only such program in the state - there should be no question. Turn to the NICU at ACH.
