NICU Head Cooling Team

In Arkansas, ACH is the only hospital that can provide the full head cooling team experience and important follow-up care. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the primary elements required to safely provide hypothermia treatment to infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are pediatric subspecialists, pediatric neuroradiologists, and doctors with specialized training in developmental follow- up.

ACH is the only hospital in Arkansas offering all these critical components:

ACH's Angel One Transport Team is trained in safe cooling practices during transport, so that cooling can be initiated sooner in order to save more brain cells. Cooling is best started within 6 hours of birth, but sooner is better.

Pediatric subspecialists, including:

  • Doctors with specialized training in newborn intensive care who are in-house 24/7
  • Doctors with specialized training in neonatal neurology
  • Doctors with specialized training in developmental follow-up
  • Pediatric neuroradiologists
  • Experienced NICU nurses trained in 24/7 head cooling treatment
  • Capability of cooling more than two infants at one time

To date, more than 130 babies have received head cooling at ACH; no other hospital in Arkansas can match expertise of Arkansas Children's Hospital.
