Heart transplantation is a critical component of the cardiology and cardiac surgery program at the Heart Institute at Arkansas Children's. As one of the busiest pediatric and congenital heart transplant programs in North America, patients in Arkansas and the southeast region look to Arkansas Children’s for this complex service. With over 25 years of heart transplant experience, our dedicated team has evaluated nearly 500 patients. The Heart Institute team at Arkansas Children’s, in partnership with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, boasts a team of pediatric cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, and adult congenital heart disease specialists ready to deal with the most complex healthcare needs.

The heart transplant program offers multiple bridge-to-transplant options such as Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Ventricular Assist Devices to extend wait times for eligible patients. Because Arkansas Children’s has pioneered many of these technologies for pediatric patients, the experience level of the heart transplant team is unmatched anywhere. In coordination with our Angel One Transport team, patients may also be moved to the Arkansas Children’s Heart Institute for further care while on one of these devices; a feat which very few centers have accomplished.

The Arkansas Children’s Heart Transplant team specializes in the evaluation and treatment of the following conditions:

  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Complex Congenital Heart Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Myocarditis
