Cason is a funny, confident and outgoing child. One would never know that for the first three years of his life, he struggled with hearing loss.
In 2001, Cason was born a seemingly normal child. The first hint that he might have hearing problems came while he was still in the hospital, when he failed a routine hearing screening.
His parents, Erica and Brad, took Cason to an audiologist for the first two years of his life and were always told he was fine and his hearing was normal. When Cason was old enough to begin playing with other children, however, his parents noticed that his speech was not developing as it should. Exasperated, his parents were unsure what to do.
Not long after, Erica met a speech pathologist who suggested she seek a second opinion on Cason’s hearing. The speech pathologist recommended that Erica bring Cason to ACH.
Once Cason arrived at the ACH audiology clinic, Erica knew this time was different. After only two appointments, the audiology clinic had diagnosed him, fitted him and ordered his first hearing aids.
“When we came to ACH, I felt like we had been rescued,” Erica says. “We had gone almost three years without knowing anything, and ACH gave us a diagnosis within two days. It was such a relief.”
On Cason’s third birthday, he returned to ACH to receive his first hearing aids. He received the best gift of all that year – the gift of hearing.
“The ACH audiology clinic has been such a huge blessing in our lives,” says Erica. “The staff goes out of their way to be helpful and they are always available to answer our questions.”
Cason visits ACH once a week for speech therapy. He will have to wear hearing aids for the rest of his life, but for now, he is just enjoying being a normal boy who loves to play sports, dance and listen to music.
