Sherwood, Arkansas
In December 2003, 7-year-old Shelby was sent to Arkansas Children’s Hospital
after a CT scan showed a brain tumor. Shelby, who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma,
immediately had surgery to remove the tumor.
“I remember the first day that Shelby was diagnosed and entered ACH,” says
Darlene, Shelby’s mom. Shelby’s doctor met us at the door.
He sat down with Shelby that day and explained to him everything that was going
on.”
After surgery, Shelby began chemotherapy and radiation. Through it all, he
stayed strong.
“He has endured surgery, chemo, radiation and multiple MRIs, and I have
never heard him complain,” says Sue Hibbs, ACH radiology technical director.
Shelby, now 11, has been cancer-free for two years. He loves to play soccer
and basketball and is a stellar student. In fact, Shelby maintained As and
Bs throughout his time at ACH.
Shelby’s medical experiences have helped him determine a future career – helping
children with cancer.
“I want to be a doctor working with cancer patients,” says Shelby. “My
doctor at ACH wasn’t just a doctor that gives medicine. He cares for
his patients and makes them feel better. I want to be a doctor like him when
I grow up.”
