On July 4, 2007, Hannah, 8, was excited to ride a brand new all-terrain vehicle (ATV). She had never ridden one before, and in all of the excitement, she did not wear a helmet. As she cruised through the yard, she lost control of the ATV and careened into the side of a neighbor’s home.
Hannah turned the ATV right and she flew off to the left. Her father immediately called 911, and made a second call to Hannah’s mother, Carla. The ambulance crew headed to Arkansas Children's Hospital, where Carla waited. She describes the moment when Hannah was wheeled into the emergency room as the worst moment of her life.
“I was standing there waiting, and I saw them wheel her in,” says Carla. “I just couldn’t believe what I saw. My little girl’s face was covered with blood. I had to compose myself before I went into the room with her. It was the hardest thing I have ever done.”
When Hannah arrived at ACH, her upper lip was split in half, her nose was broken, she had several deep lacerations on her face and knees, she had a bruise on her abdomen, and her front tooth had been knocked out.
Emergency room staff immediately repaired Hannah’s lip and other lacerations, and she was sent to have a CT scan of her head as well as x-rays of her abdomen and wrists. The scans showed no other injuries, so Hannah was sent to a patient room, where she stayed the night and recovered from her traumatic accident.
The next morning, Hannah still had not seen her face and Carla was worried about her daughter’s reaction to all of the stitches, broken nose and swollen face. Later that day, she was surprised when an ACH staff member came to talk to Hannah about the injuries she had suffered. The staff member talked to Hannah about self-esteem and how she still looked beautiful.
Hannah was released from the hospital two days after her accident. She returned to ACH the following week to have her broken nose fixed, and still has follow-up visits for dental care.
“Everyone at ACH was so wonderful,” Carla says. “As we were leaving, I thought about how fortunate we really were to be able to leave the hospital after only two days. I am so thankful to ACH for helping our daughter.”
Hannah enjoys dancing, listening to music and hanging out with friends.
