In August 2004, Maegan was born with a severe bilateral cleft lip and palate. Although her parents, Tim and Anna, saw her as perfect, they knew immediately that Maegan’s birth defect would need to be repaired.
“It was just so heartbreaking seeing Maegan for the first time,” says Anna. “The whole situation scared us because we didn’t understand it. We knew we were going to do everything we could for our daughter and that kept us going.”
Maegan’s pediatrician referred her to Arkansas Children's Hospital, where hundreds of cleft lips and palates are repaired each year. It was at ACH that Maegan and her parents first met Dr. Lisa Buckmiller, the facial surgeon who would forever change Maegan’s life.
Maegan first visited Dr. Buckmiller when she was 1 week old. She had her first surgery, to begin repairing her lip, two months later.
“It was so hard to see Maegan wheeled to surgery,” Anna says. “I just cried and cried, even though I knew she was in good hands.”
Maegan has had four other surgeries since then. Her lip has been fully repaired, and her palate, nose, gums and teeth have been fixed. To fully repair the cleft lip and palate, Maegan will continue having procedures done until she is close to adulthood.
Maegan and her family, who live in Harrisburg, feel lucky that Arkansas has a hospital like ACH.
“We feel so fortunate to live close enough to such a wonderful place with such a great medical staff,” says Anna. “Dr. Buckmiller and Arkansas Children's Hospital have been wonderful to us. There is no other place or doctor we would rather have taking care of our daughter.”
Maegan has not let her surgeries keep her from enjoying life. She is a very bright, happy child who loves being on stage and competing in pageants.
