Dr. Volkan Tuzcu

Physician at Arkansas Children’s Hospital Develops Technique for Performing Heart Catheterizations Without the Need for X-Ray

Welcome to KidsandHearts.org, online home to the Children’s Heart Center at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas. Perhaps you have a child or a friend whose child suffers from congenital heart disease.

Our mission?

Children. Hearts.

Nothing is more special than the precious gift of a child, especially when you entrust their care and life to others. We’re here to help you with life decisions of the heart.

Just for a moment, place your hand over your heart. Feel its steady rhythm, pumping lifeblood throughout your body? Close your eyes and imagine the Children’s Heart Center team of pediatric cardiologists, heart surgeons, cardiovascular perfusionists, nurses and other specialty trained caregivers monitoring and caring for your child’s heart as one coordinated group.

Children’s Heart Center. One of the top five hospitals in the United States for pediatric heart transplants and one of the top pediatric hospitals in the nation. In fact, we averaged over 600 procedures in 2004 alone. Children’s Heart Center is a place of care, love and hope for your child…and family.

Children’s Heart Center. Leading the Children’s Heart Center Team are 18 physicians in Cardiology and ICU with 247 combined years of experience. The Children’s Heart Center Team includes cardiovascular surgeons, four dedicated pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiologists and pediatric heart transplant experts.

Children’s Heart Center. Round the clock heart care. Our staff nurses are trained in the care of children with heart problems and those who have had heart surgery, with five advanced practice nurses providing care in the cardiac ICU and 10 specialty nurses. Staff physicians provide 24-hour/seven day a week in-Heart Center Patienthospital coverage of heart patients.

Children’s Heart Center. We have achieved a survival rate of 98.5 percent for patients who have had open-heart surgery, and a 92 percent survival rate for heart transplants.

Children’s Heart Center. Home of the ACH Heart Team that successfully implanted the DeBakey VAD Child, with the first miniaturized heart pump for children -- technology designed to improve blood flow for children ages 5 to 16 that are awaiting a heart transplant.

Children’s Heart Center. One of only two civilian pediatric hospitals in the nation providing mobile Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) via Angel One Transport:

  • Greatest distance for helicopter transport: Houston
  • Greatest distance for fixed-wing transport: Syracuse
  • 38 patients on ECMO support in 2004, 5 were mobile helicopter transfers

Children’s Heart Center. In 2005, we became one of only nine pediatric hospitals in the U.S. to use the Berlin Heart “bridge to heart transplant” heart pump to support a child’s failing heart.

Children. Hearts. They are the mission, the lifeblood of Children’s Heart Center at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. We are world-class pediatric heart care for you and your child.

We’re changing children’s lives…and their families.
