"At Arkansas Children's Hospital, every child we treat
becomes one of our own."
The Vascular Anomalies Center was named Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s
first Center of Excellence in 1997. One in every ten children is born with
a vascular anomaly such as a hemangioma or a vascular malformation and between
fifty and sixty percent of them will require someform of treatment. Diagnosis
is critical in guiding therapy and is often incorrect outside of centers
that specialize in the care ofpatients with these lesions.
At Arkansas Children’s Hospital, a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary program has been developed
to diagnose and treat children and adults with all types of vascular anomalies.
This program has become one of the leading centers of its kind and serves
patients from all over the United States as well as from other parts of the
world. The ACH Vascular Anomalies Center is staffed by a closely integrated
multidisciplinary team of physician specialists and related support staff
representing the disciplines of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Pathology,
Radiology, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Orthopedic Surgery.
Clinical team members work together to provide state-of-the-art care appropriate
for each individual patient.
Teaching, like clinical practice, is an important function of the ACH Vascular
Anomalies Program. Team members instruct medical students and residents about
vascular anomalies and other subjects in their disciplines and provide specialized
training to practicing physicians from all over the United States and abroad
regarding technical aspects of vascular anomaly diagnosis and treatment.
Research is also an important element of the Center and utilizing the strength
of the multidisciplinary approach. With the goal of not only continually
advancing treatment options, but also discovering fundamental mechanisms
of the underlying disease processes, team members have pioneered a number
of significant advances in the field.
The specialists at the Vascular Anomalies Center are skilled at treating a
wide variety of vascular anomalies. Some of those commonly seen at the Center
include:
Hemangiomas
Vascular Malformations
Venular Malformations or Port wine stains
Venous Malformations
Lymphatic Malformations
Arteriovenous Malformations
Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS)
Sturge-Weber Syndrome
Treatment
Both the medical treatment and care your child will receive are geared to the
special needs of each child and his or her family. The course of treatment and
surgery planned for your child begins with an initial evaluation. This initial
evaluation is one of the most important steps in the care of a child. Not only
does it increase the chances of a successful outcome, but it allows you the
opportunity to have your many questions answered as quickly and accurately as
possible. Treatment options range from observation of the anomaly to medication,
lasers and surgery.
Our Team Approach
The Vascular Anomalies Team
The Vascular Anomalies Center at ACH incorporates a multidisciplinary team,
with each member specialized in pediatric care. An important advantage of the
team approach is that the team's professionals are in direct and continuous
communication about your child¹s care. Each team member is fully aware
of your child¹s specific needs and progress and is able to make recommendations
for care which are consistent with those given by other team members. The goal
of the team is to ensure that care is provided in a coordinated, consistent
manner with the proper sequencing of evaluations and treatments.
The following specialists* may participate in planning your child's care:
Pediatric/Adult Otolaryngologist Dr. Lisa Buckmiller; Dr.
James Suen; Dr. Brendan Stack; Dr. Gresham Richter (not pictured)
Pathologist Dr. Chun-Yang Fan
Interventional Radiologist Dr. Charles James
