Arkansas Children's Hospital has the only Burn Center in Arkansas.
- We have a ten bed unit with the capacity to treat more than ten patients
at a time.
- Our average daily census last year was 10.5.
- We treat over 200 severe burns every year.
- These numbers do not include patients we treat on an outpatient basis or
patients we treat in Burn Clinic.
- 0-5 year olds are more likely to be burned than someone in any other age
group.
- However, more than 50% of our patients are 21 years old or older.
- The next closest burn units are in Memphis TN, Springfield MO, Tulsa OK,
Dallas TX and Shreveport LA.
- We are a non-profit hospital caring for patients regardless of ability to
pay.
- It costs $2-3000 per day to stay in the Burn Center.
- The average length of stay is 10 days with some patients staying six months
or even more. With the Burn Center's innovative treatment, burn patients are
able to go home sooner than ever before with better results.
- Several times per year we have patients with total bills of over $1,000,000.
This is not the total cost of the burn but just the bill for services in the
Burn Center. It does not include lost salary, pain & suffering, rehabilitation,
reconstruction surgery, or any long-term costs of the injury.
- We provide follow-up care in our Burn Clinic and work closely with Rehabilitation
Facilities and Home Health Agencies who receive our patients. We offer free
education on the long-term care of burn patients. Learn
more here.
- We work with Arkansas Professional Firefighters Association to provide a
free camp for Burn Survivor every year. Learn
more here.
- Burn Prevention education is a primary goal of the Burn Center because 80%
of all the burn injuries we treat are the result of predictable, preventable
events. Learn more here.
- By far, most of our patients survive. The course of burn treatment is long
and hard. There are extremely painful times but the Burn Center is not a gloomy,
dark place. It is very positive and lively. Our patients are encouraged to
get up, walk the halls, eat well and remain as active as possible. Very often
you will see patients walking the hall, riding tricycles in the hall and play
video games.
- Our patients are wrapped in clean white bandages at all times. There is
no smell of burned hair or skin. This is washed away when they are admitted.
Most people say the Burn Center smells like soap.
