The Donald W. Reynolds Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation is a national philanthropic organization founded in 1954 by the late media entrepreneur for whom it is named. Mr. Reynolds was the founder and principal owner of the Donrey Media Group, which he started in 1940 with the purchase of the Okmulgee Daily (Okla.) Times and the Southwest (Ark.) Times Record in Fort Smith. At the time of Mr. Reynolds’ death in 1993, his organization had grown to include 52 daily newspapers, 10 outdoor advertising companies, five cable television companies and one television station. Headquartered in Las Vegas, the Reynolds Foundation is one of the 50 largest private foundations in the United States. Caring Through the Seasons Dedicated on March 20, 2003, the Donald W. Reynolds Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Arkansas Children’s Hospital brings state-of-the-art facilities which allow for a more family-centered approach in pediatric care. Every element has been specially designed for the care and comfort of patients and their families. For children, it is especially important to involve families in their care; not only does it help ease parents’ anxiety to be nearby, but recent studies have shown that their presence can actually reduce recovery time in children. The generous support of the Reynolds Foundation has enabled us to create a PICU that’s not simply better, but is undoubtedly the best facility for critically ill children. The new unit has almost doubled our former unit in size to 22,300 square feet, an area that includes:
Private Patient Care Rooms The new Reynolds PICU at Arkansas Children’s Hospital features 22 private patient rooms, a family-focused improvement over the 19-bed open ward of the previous unit. Spacious rooms feature large windows with sweeping views of the state capitol and downtown Little Rock. Equipment columns suspend from the ceiling to make the rooms flexible and allow PICU staff to arrange bedside equipment for the patient’s best care and comfort. With a daybed, bathroom, TV/VCR and storage space in each room, parents are able to stay at their child’s bedside. Patient rooms also have adequate workspace for the large equipment that is often necessary in critical care situations. In addition to ventilators, monitors and other life-support systems, each of the rooms is equipped for:
Isolation and Procedure Rooms Although every patient room in the new Reynolds PICU can serve as an isolation area, there are four large rooms specially designed for that purpose. Overlooking a terrace garden, the rooms are fully equipped for the highest level of pediatric critical care. There are also two special procedure rooms. Highlights of these areas include: Research Room – A hallmark of the unit is a room uniquely designed for research opportunities. Metabolic monitors, pain/stress monitors, a physiology lab and other testing equipment will be available for clinical studies or for patients with rare disorders. Procedure and Resuscitation Room – This room is equipped for emergency procedures. Emergency procedures for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and other invasive procedures can easily be accomplished in this specialized space. “Caring for critically ill children is a complex task. Our new unit will allow us to provide optimal care in a less threatening environment for both the children and their families. Much attention has been given to making the Reynolds PICU a family-centered place of care.” Family Facilities Every aspect of the Reynolds PICU is designed to involve families in their child’s care. From the waiting room amenities to the bedside sleepers, our new facilities were created to be as comfortable as possible for the families of critically ill children. Support Areas for the PICU Team In addition to nursing stations, restrooms and equipment rooms within the unit, the Reynolds PICU will include a team lounge and lockers; adjacent office space for nursing, research, social workers and other team members; and private sleep rooms for attending physicians and on-call fellows and residents.
