Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

This unit is designed for complete physiologic and radiographic evaluation of infants and children with cardiovascular abnormalities. These include both congenital and acquired heart disease. The two bi-plane angiographic suites have state-of-the-art digital angiographic systems which allow the thorough evaluation of complex congenital heart problems. This equipment allows for complete physiologic recording and online analysis of angiograms in the performance of both diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures. Diagnostic procedures performed include routine evaluation of congenital heart defects including pre-surgical evaluations, cardiac biopsies, and the evaluation of pulmonary hypertension including the use of vasodilator agents such as nitric oxide. Interventional cardiac catheterization procedures include balloon valvuloplasty, occlusion of patent ductus arteriosus, device closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale, and balloon angioplasty with or without stent enlargement.

Complex intracardiac electrophysiologic studies are accomplished including transcatheter ablation of complex arrhythmias utilizing sophisticated three dimensional mapping for the exact localization of the arrhythmia. In addition, pacing studies and pacemaker implantations are also performed.

These rooms are staffed by three nurses and three radiologic technologists, all of whom are trained in cardiac physiology and anatomy. This staff provides 24-hour a day, 7-day a week coverage and supports a busy cardiac surgical program in addition to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

These labs provide care to a wide range of patients from newborns to adults with congenital heart disease.
