Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Neuroscience Center of Excellence
offers patients and their families a comprehensive and coordinated center for
the treatment of brain, nervous system and neuromuscular disorders. ACH’s
Neuroscience Center is the only program in Arkansas devoted to pediatric neurology
and neurosurgery.
Established clinics include the Pediatric Neurology Clinic, the Muscular Dystrophy
Association Clinic, the Brain Tumor Clinic, the Spina Bifida Clinic, the Pediatric
Neurosurgery Clinic, the Craniofacial Clinic, the Headache Clinic, the Pain
Clinic, the Head Injury Clinic and the Spasticity and Movement Disability Clinic.
During these clinics, physicians, nurses and other professionals who specialize
in neurological and neurosurgical disorders evaluate, treat and follow up children.
This team approach offers the most comprehensive care possible. For example,
the Pain Clinic is the only one in the region and one of only five programs
in the United States that provides a multidisciplinary team with both acute
and chronic pain management services. For more

Center for Craniofacial Anomalies
The Craniofacial Clinic is the only program of its kind in the region. It provides
diagnosis, evaluation and treatment for children with a variety of craniofacial
deformities and malformations. The Craniofacial Team consists of pediatric neurosurgeons,
craniofacial plastic surgeons, a craniofacial orthodontist, an otolaryngologist,
a geneticist, a prosthetist, an orthotist, a speech/language pathologist and
a child life specialist.
Headache Clinic
Having a headache is a common ailment for children and adolescents. The Headache
Clinic provides these patients with efficient and thorough diagnosis and treatment
by a multidisciplinary staff that includes pediatrician with a special interest
in childhood headaches. Treatment for all types of headaches including migraine,
tension, chronic daily headache, sinus infection and other more serious headache
conditions is available. State-of-the-art diagnostic evaluation including CT,
MRI, EEG and laboratory evaluation is available.
Head Injury Clinic
This clinic is designed to help the child and family with long term effects
of post-traumatic complications from head injuries. Most patients come after
inpatient rehabilitation on the Progressive Rehabilitation Unit, but we accept
referrals from others. The clinic addresses medical and psychological concerns
including diagnosis of any late medical or neurological complications and interventions
such as medication management as indicated, neuropsychology referrals, on-going
assistance with home, educational and community re-entry, and screening and
follow-up of dysphagia and cognitive or higher level language issues with speech
and language pathology.
Muscular Dystrophy and Neuromuscular Clinics
The Neuromuscular Clinic provides management and ongoing evaluation of children
with muscular dystrophies, peripheral neuropathies, metabolic and structural
myopathies, brachial plexus disorders and other rare muscle and nerve disorders.
An MDA patient representative is available with information for families on
various conditions and MDA services and summer camp. Alliance Home Health and
Snell’s Orthotic Lab reps are available to help provide MDA covered services
and equipment as needed and desired. We have a proactive program of pulmonary
assessment and care and also refer for cardiologic studies and consultation
as indicated.
Neurology and Epilepsy Clinic
This clinic is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the
peripheral and central nervous system. Patients with seizures or epilepsy receive
comprehensive evaluations. APNOC (Arkansas Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Clinic) Brain and
Spinal Cord Tumors
The Arkansas Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Clinic provides comprehensive care for
children with brain and spinal cord tumors. The clinic consists of a multi-disciplinary
team: pediatric neurosurgeon, pediatric neurologist, pediatric hematology-oncology
and pediatric neuropsychologist.
Neurophysiology Laboratory The Neurophysiology Laboratory provides state-of-the-art neurophysiological
testing for inpatients and outpatients of all ages. The many modalities of testing
include: routine and portable EEG, digital EEG, evoked potential, EMG, 24-hour
ambulatory EEG, intraoperative monitoring for neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery
and extensive long-term video telemetry EEG for both medical and surgical treatment
of epilepsy. Testing can be performed Monday through Friday and must be scheduled
through a physician.
Neurosurgery Clinic
The Neurosurgery Clinic provides management and evaluation of children with
disorders of the nervous system, epilepsy, head injury, hydrocephalus, spasticity,
spina bifida, spinal cord disorders including trauma and congenital anomalies.
Spasticity and Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Clinic
The Spasticity and Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Clinic provides diagnosis, evaluation
and management of patients with hypertonia and cerebral palsy and provides evaluation
for treatment of spasticity using an intrathecal baclofen pump. The clinic also
provides continued management of intrathecal baclofen pump patients. A team
approach is utilized to serve the patients of this clinic.
Pediatric Pain Management Clinic
The Pediatric Pain Management Clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment
of chronic pain conditions including headaches, back pain, abdominal pain, neuropathic
pain and myofascial pain. Evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents
is interdisciplinary. Specialists from anesthesia, psychology, nursing, pharmacology,
physical therapy, social work and child life education staff the clinic.
Spina Bifida Clinic
This clinic provides multidisciplinary care for the child with spina bifida
or childhood acquired spinal cord injury. Services provided include neurosurgery,
orthopaedics, pediatric rehab, urology, nursing, physical therapy, occupational
therapy, europsychology, nutrition and social services. This is an evaluation
and management specialty clinic. The clinic works with many other specialties
throughout the ACH system.
Note: This clinic is available to your child by physician referral.
Talk with your child’s physician and tell him/her you would like to be
referred to ACH. Have the doctor contact the Arkansas Children’s Hospital
Physician Referral Services Department to make a referral. If your child does
