We treat nearly all children who receive care at Arkansas Children’s, whether they have a common illness or a rare condition. Our pathologists are experts at performing tests to diagnose everything from acute appendicitis to rare forms of pediatric cancer.
Our pathology team also works with your child’s doctors to determine the best treatments and to ensure that your child responds well to the care and treatments provided.
Acute appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. The appendix can be blocked and can fill with bacteria.
Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare childhood cancer that is most often diagnosed in children between the ages of 1 and 4.

In some cases, surgery is needed to remove a tumor or to remove sections of bone, muscle or soft tissue that is affected by cancer or benign growth.
Our surgeons do everything possible to restore the affected bone or limb. After the affected bone and tissue is removed, the remaining gap in the bone is replaced with a bone graft or an artificial metal part.
Radiation uses special kinds of energy waves or seeds to fight cancer cells and prevent them from growing and spreading. The type of radiation therapy used depends on the kind of cancer being treated.
A blood transfusion is when donated blood from our blood bank is transferred to your child.
Studies of liquid bone marrow and pieces of bone containing marrow are taken and then examined to check for abnormal blood cells.
The Pathology team performs a biopsy of the esophagus to study the cells of the esophageal wall.
Tests are performed to study how well your child's immune system will accept a donor heart.
Pathology provides studies of the cells lining the intestines and the colon to find out what is causing inflammation.
A peripheral smear review is a blood test used to look for abnormalities in the number and shape of blood cells.
Our chaplains are on staff to assist all patients and families from any faith background with religious and spiritual needs.
Child Life reduces stress and promotes positive coping using developmentally appropriate preparation, education, and play at Arkansas Children's.
