The Preadmission Orientation program seeks to familiarize children and parents
with the hospital environment before admission. Children become acquainted with
the sights, sounds, people and events they are likely to encounter after admission.
The goal is to reduce patients' and parents' anxieties which accompany unfamiliar
surroundings and events. At the orientation, parents and children will take
a tour of the hospital, have an opportunity to become familiar with medical
equipment, learn what to expect before, during and after surgery and have a
question and answer session. Parents are encouraged to call the Child Life and
Education department at 364-1412 to schedule a tour. Often these tours can be
scheduled on the same day as a clinic appointment. Pamphlets on the Preadmission
Orientation program are available for physicians upon request.
