Speech Pathology Services

The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Arkansas Children's provides comprehensive assessments in a variety of areas of communication and feeding/swallowing disorders and offers the following:

Inpatient Services

The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Arkansas Children’s provides comprehensive assessment and management in the areas of feeding/swallowing, oral-motor function, and speech-language-cognition.  Services are provided to all units of the hospital including:

  • General medical floors
  • Intensive care units
    • Burn Unit
    • Cardio-Vascular Intensive Care Unit
    • Intermediate Care Unit
    • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
    • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Progressive Rehabilitation Unit

A physician order is required for a patient to receive inpatient Speech-Language Pathology services.  Services provided include evaluation and management in the following areas:

  • Developmental care in the NICU
  • Cognitive-linguistic evaluations
  • Feeding/Swallowing evaluations– including both clinical bedside swallowing evaluations and videofluoroscopic swallow studies
  • Passy Muir® Valve evaluations
  • Comprehensive speech-language evaluations

Outpatient Services

The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Arkansas Children’s provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of speech, cognitive-linguistic, and feeding/swallowing skills of children. Assistance is also provided in the area of reintegration into the home and school settings.

Your child may benefit from an outpatient speech and/or language evaluation if he exhibits difficulty in any of the following areas:

  • Feeding/Swallowing Disorder
  • Fluency Disorder (Stuttering)
  • Language Disorder
  • Resonance Disorder
  • Speech Disorder
  • Velopharyngeal Insufficiency
  • Voice Disorder
