Dr. Tas’s primary area of research is the metabolic complications of childhood obesity. His research mainly focuses on developing strategies to mitigate the metabolic complications of obesity, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, in children. Dr. Tas is a research project leader at the Center for Childhood Obesity Prevention (CCOP), a National Institute of Health (NIH) Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence located at Arkansas Children’s Research Institute (ACRI). His primary research evaluates the health benefits of a short-term high-intensity interval training program in adolescents at risk for obesity-related complications. Dr. Tas actively collaborates with researchers at CCOP/ACRI and other researchers at the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC) to achieve his goals.
Dr. Tas serves as a collaborating physician for the ACNC, a USDA Agricultural Research Service-funded multidisciplinary center focused on the long-term consequences of nutrition and physical activity on maternal and child health. He also serves as a faculty mentor for medical students and pediatric residents for their personal and academic growth and in their scholarly activities.
