2008 Annual Report


Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas and one of the largest in the United States serving children from birth to age 21. The campus spans 29 city blocks and houses 316 beds, a staff of approximately 500 physicians, 80 residents in pediatrics and pediatric specialties and more than 4,200 employees. The private, nonprofit healthcare facility boasts an internationally renowned reputation for medical breakthroughs and intensive treatments, unique surgical procedures and forward-thinking medical research - all dedicated to fulfilling our mission of enhancing, sustaining and restoring children’s health and development. ACH is named one of U.S. News & World Report’s best pediatric hospitals and is also ranked No. 85 on the 2008 FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For®.

Our physicians are consistently recognized for their outstanding performance and achievement in taking care of our young patients. In 2004, 91 doctors from Arkansas Children’s Hospital were listed among The Best Doctors in America.* Our physicians also were included among the 2005 Top Doctors in America list, as well as the Arkansas Times’ selection of best physicians in the state.

ACH serves as the pediatric teaching affiliate of UAMS and is home to the Department of Pediatrics. ACH is the classroom where medical students study the pediatric component of all disciplines. In turn, UAMS shares its current medical breakthroughs and technological advancements. UAMS faculty on the ACH campus are practicing physicians as well as teachers to UAMS students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and allied health.

Mission

In order to enhance, sustain and restore the health and development of children, Arkansas Children's Hospital provides excellent clinical services, teaching and research. ACH is committed to working with others to achieve high quality, cost-effective, fully accessible services for Arkansas' most precious resource — our children, without regard to race, religion or inability to pay.

Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct is adopted as supplementary to the Mission and Values Statements of Arkansas Children's Hospital (“ACH”) and its subsidiaries. The Code applies to all who perform services on the ACH campus. To the best of our ability:

1. We are committed to the ethical treatment of those to whom we have an obligation.

This includes our employees, our patients and their families, our community, our payors, our professional staff, our donors and volunteers.

2. Patient Confidentiality

We will protect and respect the privacy of our patients and employees. It is the responsibility of each ACH employee to maintain patient confidentiality and to not disclose confidential patient information that violates the privacy rights of our patients.

3. We are committed to obey the law.

We conduct all organizational activities in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Each of us reports appropriately any suspected wrongdoing and cooperates with activities and investigations which are conducted to ensure compliance.

We recognize that internal disciplinary actions will result from noncompliance.

4. We promote a positive work environment.

Harassment or discrimination of any kind, especially involving race, sexual preference, color, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, marital or veteran status is totally unacceptable and should be reported.

5. We work safely.

Each of us is responsible for observing universal precautions when applicable and for assisting others to do so. We are committed to a drug free workplace and recognize that to ensure that we may be subject to random drug tests.

6. We keep accurate and complete records.

All patient records meet the documentation standards required for quality care and to meet reimbursement regulations. Patient records are treated confidentially as provided by law and are completed promptly.

7. We obey all antitrust laws.

Antitrust laws are designed to create a level playing field in the marketplace and to promote fair competition. Actions such as price fixing, stealing trade secrets, offering or accepting bribes or kickbacks are forbidden by the antitrust laws.

8. We know and follow the law relating to government and donor contracts.

Political activities and contacts with government officials are conducted in accordance with applicable laws.

Fund raising activities are conducted so as not to violate state or federal law.

9. We carefully bid and negotiate contracts.

In the event that bid proposals are solicited or contract negotiations are undertaken, we are certain that all statements, communications and representations to prospective suppliers are accurate and truthful.

10. No illegal gifts, favors or kickbacks are given or received.

We will abide by organizational policies on acceptable gifts and discounts.

11. We avoid conflicts of interest.

As individuals we avoid taking part in any decision where we have a self-interest in the outcome. We avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest by fully disclosing facts which may appear to be a conflict of interest, and abide by the decision of management or the Board, as the case may be, as to any potential conflict.

12. We use our Organization’s assets wisely.

We recognize that the community has entrusted assets to us to be used for children’s health. We safeguard, invest, and use assets to achieve the mission of our organization.

13. We make use of the reporting systems when we observe or suspect that this Code is not being honored.

Reports will be made to the Compliance Office. Reports will be made directly to the Compliance Officer or by way of the telephone hotline.

14. We follow through on all compliance complaints.

In the event that a report of a violation of the Code of Conduct is brought to the attention of the Compliance Officer by any means, an evaluation of the complaint will expeditiously be completed. The evaluation will determine if the complaint is a Code of Conduct matter.

15. Corrective action will be undertaken whenever a violation of the Code of Conduct has been confirmed by a thorough and fair investigation.

In the event a violation of the Code of Conduct is substantiated, corrective action will be taken in accordance with the appropriate ACH policies and procedures.
