Botulinum A toxin (Botox®) is a medication commonly known for its use in cosmetics (reducing wrinkles). This medication, however, has many other uses, such as helping to treat certain types of headaches and decreasing saliva production.
Prior to the procedure, your child will be evaluated to ensure the injection is warranted. If sedation is required, your child will need to be fasting for an appropriate amount of time.
The procedure is performed in the Interventional Radiology room. After cleaning the area of concern, local numbing medicine is used. Under image guidance, the needle is advanced to the desired location. After confirming the appropriate needle location, Botox is injected.
The results may take up to 2 weeks to take full effect. These results may last anywhere from 2 to 12 months. The procedure can then be repeated at that time.
