What is hematuria?

Hematuria is blood in the urine. It is a common condition in children that can have many causes, and in most cases, it is not serious.

There are two main types of hematuria:

• Microscopic: This type of hematuria can only be seen with a microscope. It may be found if your child has a urine test.
• Gross: This type of hematuria can be seen in the urine, giving it a red or rust color.
  

What are the signs and symptoms of hematuria?

Children with microscopic hematuria often have no symptoms. Children with gross hematuria will have red-colored urine. Either type can be associated with other urinary symptoms, most often painful urination.

What causes hematuria?

There are many possible causes of hematuria in children. Some common causes may include:

• Urinary tract infection
• Kidney stones
• A blockage in the urinary tract
• An injury to the urinary tract
• Strenuous exercise
• Rash or irritation around the urethral opening
