Study Overview

The Happy Tummies Study is a nutrition research study designed to look at the gut health and immune systems of infants that are fed exclusively breast-milk or fed exclusively formula.

Study Eligibility

Infants less than 1 month old that are exclusively formula feeding, or 3-month old infants that have been exclusively breastfed.

Study Requirements

For babies exclusively fed formula:

Mom and baby will attend 5 study visits, starting when baby is 1 month old.

Visits 1 and 2: 1-month and 2-month-old visits (approximately 1 hour)

  • Similac Advance or Enfamil Infant formula provided
  • Ask about baby’s nutrition
  • Obtain some body measurements on baby

Visit 3: 3-month-old visit (approximately 4 hours)

  • Ask medical history questions
  • Obtain some body temperature and composition measurements on baby
  • Perform blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection on baby
  • Ask mom to complete a 3-day food record

Visit 4: Follow up from the 3-month-old visit (approximately 1 hour)

  • Return with 3 month food records and 3 month stool samples
  • 5-month supply of Similac Advance or Enfamil Infant formula and diapers provided, to thank you for your participation

Visit 5: 14-month-old visit (approximately 2 hours)

  • We will have you come after baby has received their vaccinations and ask you to bring those records with you
  • Perform blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection on baby
  • Provide an additional 3-month supply of diapers to thank you for your participation at this visit

For babies exclusively breastfed:

Mom and baby will attend 2 study visits when baby is 3 months old, and one visit when baby is 14 months old.

Visit 1: 3-month-old visit (approximately 4 hours)

  • We will ask medical history questions
  • Obtain some body temperature and composition measurements on baby
  • Perform a blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection on baby
  • Ask mom to complete a 3-day food record and provide a breastmilk sample

Visit 2: (approximately 1 hour)

  • Return with completed food records, breast milk sample, and stool samples
  • 3-month supply of diapers will be provided.

Visit 3: At the 14-month-old visit (approximately 2 hours)

  • We will have you come after baby has received their vaccinations and ask you to bring those records with you
  • We will perform blood, urine, stool, and cheek swab collection on baby
  • We will ask you to provide a breastmilk sample if you are still breast-feeding
  • Ask mom to complete a 3-day food record
  • An additional 3-month supply of diapers will be provided to thank you for your participation at this visit

If we ask you to return for a repeat visit, you will be compensated with either diapers or a check for $25 for your time.
