Champions Pavilion, a 157,916-square-foot outpatient care facility located on the Arkansas Children’s Golisano Campus in Little Rock, is imagination come to life. The facility, opening in May, provides access to the same level of pediatric care and surgical expertise that Arkansas Children’s is known for, without having to navigate the hospital.

Having a dedicated building for outpatient care will allow Arkansas Children’s experts to see more pediatric patients, increase inpatient and outpatient surgeries and hire more team members, creating an unmatched health care experience for children and families.

Here are five facts parents and caregivers should know about Champions Pavilion:

Where is Champions Pavilion located?

Champions Pavilion is at 1 Children's Way, located at the corner of 10th Street and Children’s Way. It has its own entrance for outpatient surgeries and procedures, research and rehabilitation. Champions Pavilion also includes an enclosed skywalk bridge attached to Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) for quick access to the hospital.

What is inside Champions Pavilion?

Champions Pavilion has three floors, with eight surgical suites (expandable to 12) and 26 exam rooms.

Currently, inside ACH, there are 12 operating rooms and four small procedure spaces that are unusable for surgeries. While the number of rooms in both ACH and Champions Pavilion decreased, they are substantially larger, with more space for complex surgeries that require modern, specialized equipment. Physicians estimate that a more focused approach could increase surgical volume by 20-30%. Up to 10 to 15 surgeries could be scheduled daily, five days a week, in one outpatient surgical room.

Each floor includes:

• Lobby, Market Coffee and Exchange (a grab-and-go cafe)
• Orthopedics and sports medicine

• Pediatric clinical research unit   

• Skywalk bridge
• Eight surgical suites
• Post-anesthesia care unit
• Central sterile processing for medical equipment

What specialties are in Champions Pavilion?

Medical experts at Champions Pavilion offer outpatient surgeries in ear, nose and throat (ENT), orthopedics and sports medicine, pediatric general surgery, vascular anomalies, gastroenterology, urology, gynecology, dental, plastic surgery and ophthalmology. Clinic appointments are available for orthopedics and sports medicine and physical therapy.

The new facility houses some of the top outpatient surgeries and procedures for the following specialties:

• Ear, nose and throat (ENT): ear tube placement, tonsil and adenoid removal
• Vascular anomalies: hemangiomas, combined and complex malformations, vascular tumors and cancer
• Gastroenterology (GI): upper scopes like esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopies
• Urology: penile surgeries, including circumcision, hypospadias and orchiopexy
• Orthopedics and sports medicine: ACL surgery and other sports medicine surgeries; all outpatient surgeries associated with extremities
• Pediatric general surgery: utilizing lasers for minimally invasive surgeries; a variety of laparoscopies for surgeries like congenital hernia repairs, including inguinal, umbilical and epigastric

What are the unique features of Champions Pavilion?

Champions Pavilion includes several unique advancements for pediatric health care:

• State-of-the-art sports medicine facility: It features turf, a track surface, a wooden basketball floor and an expanded gym. It has advanced technologies, such as motion analysis, which help the sports medicine care team analyze an athlete’s movements, including post-surgery, to improve performance and prevent injuries. Sports medicine experts focus on pre-injury and pre-surgery therapies. For example, if an athlete has knee pain but is otherwise healthy, they identify modifiable risk factors that might help prevent a tear or injury. The sports medicine team offers more high-level, supervised rehab and training, monitoring motion and movement quality for student athletes who may no longer need physical therapy but are not ready to return to their sport.
  
  
• Staying with your child: Parents or caregivers can be with their child as they go under anesthesia in a private induction room, and as they wake up from anesthesia in the post-anesthesia care unit. During an outpatient surgical procedure, families wait in a private consultation room rather than the main waiting area, providing more privacy and comfort.
  
  
• Pediatric clinical research unit (PCRU): The expanded, dedicated PCRU provides a modern, child-friendly space that allows more children to participate in research as outpatients and benefit from the latest medical treatments. The 14,000-square-foot PCRU is designed as a one-stop shop for research visits. It includes: 16 private treatment rooms; all essential services in one place, including a phlebotomy room (used for drawing blood), lab, pharmacy and kitchen; additional storage for equipment and supplies; and additional workspaces for team members and research investigators.

Where do I park at Champions Pavilion?

Champions Pavilion visitors receive free valet parking (no tips accepted) from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parents and caregivers can drive to the Champions Pavilion entrance under the awning. A member of the Arkansas Children’s valet team will park the vehicle and bring it back to the entrance when families are ready to leave.
