Congenital scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine caused by incomplete formation or separation of the vertebrae. This rare condition is present at birth and occurs in 1 in 10,000 newborns. The curve of the spine can become severe as your child grows.
Treatments include:
Bracing or casting. This treatment can control new curves that may develop to help the body remain upright.
Surgery. Surgery is used to correct:
Severe or worsening curves
Deformities in the spine or trunk
Developing neurological problems caused by a pinched spinal cord
The goal of surgery is always to allow the spine and chest to grow as much as possible. Different kinds of surgery are used, depending on your child’s specific condition. Most young children recover quickly and can return to their normal activities
