STReNGth & Outpatient Exercise Regimen in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoblastic Lymphoma
Summary and study objectives
As survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have improved, more long-term treatment effects are being rapidly discovered. Sedentary lifestyles and the loss of physical fitness commonly occur during the first month of treatment and extend into survivorship. In addition to assessing short-term benefits like improved physical function and treatment tolerance, this study also explores how regular, structured physical activity during therapy may promote long-term health and reduce chronic complications in survivorship — a growing concern as survival rates for ALL continue to improve. We propose that early intervention through physical exercise may lower the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and/or cardiovascular events in survivors. This study aims to explore the role of exercise during treatment for pediatric and adolescent patients with newly diagnosed ALL. The STRONGER study is evaluating the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a structured exercise program delivered during the most intensive phases of chemotherapy. Designed for patients ages 11–21, the program includes 12 months of personalized strength and aerobic training sessions three times per week, either in-person at the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC) Fitness Facility or through virtual coaching. Personal trainers at ACNC will be included in selecting appropriate exercise techniques and equipment for each patient. All participants enrolled will receive a fitness tracker (Fitbit®), which is his or hers to keep following the completion of the study. Additionally, participants will be compensated following defined completion points throughout the duration of their participation. Participants will not be billed for any components of this study.
