Heart Health starts in Childhood - ACNC Investigator Recently featured on KATV

Heart health starts in childhood — and experts say the habits formed early in life can have lasting effects well into adulthood.

During Heart Health Month, Dr. Keshari Thakali of the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center shared this important message in a recent segment on KATV. Dr. Thakali emphasized that everyday behaviors — including how children eat, move, and sleep — play a critical role in shaping long-term cardiovascular health. By focusing on these foundational habits early, families can help reduce the risk of heart disease later in life.

Simple, consistent choices can make a meaningful difference. Encouraging more active play, offering balanced and nutritious meals, prioritizing quality sleep, and limiting screen time are all practical steps that support a child's overall well-being. While these changes may seem small, their cumulative impact over time can be significant.

As communities continue to prioritize children’s health, the message is clear: healthy hearts begin with healthy habits. By investing in these routines early, families can help set the stage for a healthier future.

Supporting Healthy Starts: Community Comes Together for Arkansas Children’s Newborn Event

Community connection and early support were on full display at the recent Arkansas Children’s “For a Newborn” Event: Health, Safety & Learning — a day dedicated to helping families build a strong foundation for their babies’ health and well-being.

The ACNC team spent the day connecting with families, sharing practical nutrition guidance and discussing opportunities to get involved in research. These conversations not only provided valuable resources for parents and caregivers but also highlighted the important role that community-based research plays in improving child health outcomes.

Hosted by the ACH Southwest Little Rock Clinic, the event brought together a wide range of services aimed at supporting new and expecting families. Attendees had access to car seat safety checks, health screenings, safe sleep education, vaccinations and other essential resources — all designed to promote safety and wellness from the very beginning.

Events like this serve as a powerful reminder that strong communities are built through collaboration and shared commitment. By bringing together healthcare providers, researchers and families, these events help ensure children have the healthy start they need to grow and thrive.
