Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin condition where small lumps occur where you have lots of oil and sweat glands such as under your arms, in your groin area, at your inner thighs under your breasts. This condition is much more common in females.
Symptoms include areas that may become more red and painful. If infected, they can fill with pus and look similar to a "pimple."
Hidradenitis suppurativa is diagnosed by history and physical exam. Lab work or x-rays are usually not needed.
Hidradenitis suppurativa is treated with a combination of improved hygiene, lifestyle changes, and medicines. As a last resort, surgery is sometimes used to drain the infection or remove the lumps.
The pediatric surgeons at Arkansas Children's frequently see this condition. They have developed non-invasive protocols for management that let patients and families get back to normal activities as soon as possible.
