As the only pediatric dialysis program in the state, the hemodialysis unit at Arkansas Children’s cares for chronic and acute patients with kidney failure and peritoneal dialysis patients and patients in our intensive care unit (ICU). During dialysis, a machine does the work of the kidneys, removing waste substances and excess water from the blood. The unit serves children from across the state and surrounding areas, offering a full range of kidney replacement therapies:
Patients in the kidney dialysis unit may be on dialysis for various medical conditions. We provide a specially trained team of physicians, dialysis nurses, social workers and nutritionists. This team works with several community services and coordinates care for patients visiting from out of state.
Arkansas Children's has one of the country's largest peritoneal dialysis programs, allowing patients and families to attend school, travel, and enjoy other activities without worrying about scheduling dialysis appointments.
As patients enter their teens, Arkansas Children’s works closely with them to educate and empower them about their medical situation. This allows patients to become proactive advocates for their health.
