The Thyroid Center at Arkansas Children's Hospital is composed of fellowship-trained experts in endocrinology, surgery, radiology, pathology, and oncology to form an integrated multidisciplinary care approach toward your child. We provide assessments from infants to young adults with thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism.
Your primary care physician will submit a referral to one of our specialists. Depending on your child's condition, you will see some or all of the team members during your work-up. Your child will undergo a thyroid ultrasound to evaluate the thyroid better. Ultrasound is a completely pain-free and radiation-free test. Some patients will need an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration; this is a minor procedure conducted by our interventional radiologist to acquire a thyroid biopsy to help direct appropriate management.
No parent wants to hear their child has thyroid cancer. The Arkansas Children's Pediatric Thyroid Center was designed to manage all thyroid conditions, including thyroid cancer. Pediatric thyroid cancer is rare and requires surgical intervention. Excellent outcomes have been associated with those surgeons that perform a high volume of these surgeries. The surgeons associated with the Thyroid Center perform more open neck pediatric surgeries than anyone in the state of Arkansas, which means you can trust that your child is in the best hands.
Based on the American Thyroid Association's latest recommendations, post-operative radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer is available at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
